2014: Steve took home the hibernation award after solidly racking up around 14 hours of sleep per night. Steve had a rough go of it being paired with Zach on Friday. Saturday morning he scored a birdie 3 on the 1st hole but then needed another 117 shots to finish the final 17 holes. After nearly being ejected from the course in the afternoon, he battled back to a controversial one hole loss on Saturday afternoon. He did manage to spend 50 dollars a day on upcharges to his free dinner though. Prime Rib and cheesecake all day!
2015: Steve was looking for his first Ryder Cup point this year and did not get it on Friday paired with Zach. However a flawless Saturday helped the Cobra Kai achieve their second consecutive victory. The sirens were going off for Steve's victory....actually that was the smoke detector going off at 3am while Steve was grilling burgers.
2016: Gordo started off the weekend with a tie in the first round but him and teammate Brandon couldn’t find the magic to knock off Zale and loudmouth Eckles. It took everything he had not to punch Kyle in the Saturday morning round and the frustration bled over into his 1 on 1 round where he was demolished by MVP Zale and decided to snap his driver in half. He did cap off the weekend with a 50 dollar steak that he purchased from the Crystal Mountain restaurant however was devastated when he found out the 50$ did not include cooking the steak.
2017: Gordon was so happy he didn’t have to play in a foursome with Kyle that he forgot to bring his A game Friday afternoon. He lost with Brad to Eric and Zale 3&1. Saturday morning was different once he had a chain smoking partner with him (C-Lo). They took down Troy and Jeff 3&1. Saturday afternoon he was paired with the Bandit and who knows what went on in that cart. He battled Jeff to a tie to secure half a point for the Cobra Kai. 2018: Friday afternoon was a big matchup against Searge and Ken. Searge is a great golfer and Ken knows how to get Gordo good and messed up. With the help of the Bandit they won the match on the 18th hole 1UP to secure a point. Then it was back to the condo for surf and turf before having to be paired with Zach Saturday morning. Against Ken again, it was a tough matchup since Ken knew how to get both Gordon and Zach messed up. They battled but lost on the 18th hole 1DN. In a revenge grudge match, Gordon took on Kyle Eckles in the 1 on 1. He made short work of him with a 6&5 victory
2019: Steve is the prototypical Cobra Kai member and embodies everything it means to be part of Cobra Kai. He mentally took down Jason and scumbag Dan in the first round with the help of Barkeley. Saturday morning he was forced to play with Mel making his first two partners a total combined age of 231. It was a tight match until the back 9 when Lombardo pulled away. He played strong in the 1 on 1 round despite having to deal with his riding partner Brandon. The constant roller derby chat seemed to rejuvenate Steve into a solid 3&1 victory over Nathan.
2021: Gordo started out this Ryder cup a bit rough pairing with Casey. They had a tough match against the Lombardo team of Zale and Dan. Unfortunately, the match wasn't close, and Gordo had to regroup for the Saturday morning round. Gordo and Clo partnered up Saturday morning against Ken and Kyle. Unfortunately for Team Lombardo, this was a 1v2 match and CLo and Gordo steamrolled the Lombardo pairing 7&6, the largest scramble loss in recent memory. Gordo was matched against Dan in the 1v1 match. The match was up and down through the first 9 holes, and all square at the turn. Gordo lost holes 11 and 13, 14, and 15 all but sealing the victory for Dan, who won 4&3.
It is widely believed that Steve was a member of the original Cobra Kai from the 80s. Riding dirt bikes, smoking in the bathroom at the school dance, beating up the new kid in school…Steve was made for this. He will typically be seen on the course smashing beers, smashing drives, chain smoking, and hitting on the cart girl. He will be seen after golf in the dining room and into bed for a good 13 hour slumber.
Ryder Cup Highlight
Some would argue that Steve's Ryder Cup highlight came when he birdied the first hole in the 2014 Best Ball striking fear into Eric and Searge. However, I don't think anyone has had as much happiness on their face as when Steve was devouring his gourmet dinners in the clubhouse. With limited Ryder Cup history, the cheesecake on Saturday night was Steve's Ryder Cup highlight.
Steve is a platinum card holder at Bouzouki's in Greektown where he is also known as "Mr. Champagne Room". The odds are very good that Saturday at 7:30am when Steve is schedule to tee off, he will still be in the backroom at CrossRoads.
